Hi All,

I am Paul Mei, the QE manager for JDS in Beijing.

After discussing with my team and other peoples, I'd like to suggest to setup
one community called desktop-testing. The purpose for it is like:
1. We want to have one place to share all desktop-testing related information
   We have regularly bi-weekly testing result for desktop. We want to share our
test result in the community, because I heard lots of people are interested in
the desktop quality status, like firefox, flash, pidgin in opensolaris, IPS GUI
...
   There are lots of new project integrated into Desktop, like firefox3, flash
10, metatracker... People have interest about them, its test plan, its quality,
etc.

2. Attract and organize more people to involve in desktop-testing
   The people outside of Sun can contribute lots for desktop testing/quality,
because they are using the desktop applications for daily work. Currently we
have cooperated with Mozilla community to organize students in China to do the
test day for firefox on Solaris, it is very helpful for our testing. I hope we
can do more through the desktop-testing community in OpenSolaris.

My thinking is that it will be one sub-community under desktop community of
OpenSolaris. And there is one link from testing community of OpenSolaris for
it, then people can easily find it from testing community.

I wrote one draft proposal for desktop-testing community. Please give your
suggestion what we need to do for setup one community like this.

Please kindly have a look and give your comments.

Thanks,
Paul.

Proposal for desktop-testing community*

*1. Brief introduction*
OpenSolaris Desktop is based on open source communities, with many community
members directly to those upstream projects. Desktop quality is very important
for OpenSolaris community. Its quality is related with everyone using
OpenSolaris, it is critical for customer.

*2. Purpose*
Desktop testing is to communicate desktop application testing progress and its
quality, attract and organize people to involve desktop quality-related work.
Desktop testing is related with all applications in the desktop, like firefox,
thunderbird, lightling, gnome, evolution, flash, Compiz, pidgin, multimedia,
Ekiga, Gamin, Vino, A11Y, SSA, MetaTracker, etc. There are lots of open source
community or third parties involved in desktop testing. There are lots of
OpenSolaris desktop-related testing result in different community, it is hard
for people to find out all the related information from different places. The
desktop-testing community can benefit desktop user and tester if there are one
place to share all the quality information.

*3. Discussion Area in this community*

Below are some areas in mind:

_/*GNOME*/_
* Integrate latest gnome version to OpenSolaris
* Gnome Asia Summit
  We are working on this, it will be held on Oct. 2008, Beijing.

_/*Mozilla*/_
* Contribute firefox latest version to mozilla community
* Integrate latest firefox/thunderbird/lightling into OpenSolaris community
* Involve the testday and bugday on mozilla community

_/*Flash/Acroread*/_
* Flash 9.4 integration into S10/Nevada, OpenSolaris
* Flash 10 on testing
* Acroread in x86(TBD)

_/*Multimedia*/_

* Realplayer 11 in OpenSolaris

_/*A11Y*/_
* A11Y assessment for desktop application
* A11Y bi-weekly testing report

_/*Compiz/Pidgin/Ekiga/etc

**Test Day/*//*Bug Day*/_
Test Day/Bug Day is the event we involve people out-of-Sun to involve our
testing work
Currently we are involving students in China for the desktop application
testing, like firefox, metatracker on Solaris. It will extend in gnome and
other applications

_/*New applications integration*/_
There will be lots of new applications integrated into Desktop.
* Ubuntu parity applications testing for OpenSolaris, it is targeted
OpenSolaris Nov.
* Printing enhancement
* IPS GUI, etc

_/*Automation Testing*/_
We have done lots of automation work for Desktop applications:

* Automation testing development for A11Y
* Automation testing result based on bi-weekly build

_/*Process*/_
* Make some guideline how to involve the desktop tesing
* Test Case Management tool
  ApTest: test case managment tool, we have evaluated some test case managment
tool. ApTest is the tool we are using, and hope it can be used in OpenSolaris
community for desktop testing. It can save all test cases, test result, test
session in it.
* Bug System
  Bugster/OpenSolaris bugzilla

*4. Communication*
* mail alias: we want to setup one mail alias to discuss about desktop quality
and testing
