The plugins required for DVD playback require license. For example,
most DVD's are encoded in MPEG2 format. Sun doesn't have license
to ship these codecs, so "simple playing of a DVD movie" can't be
included in Solaris. At least not until Sun starts paying the
associated licensing fees.

The plugins required to play formats like MPEG2 are in
gst-plugins-ugly. The gst-plugins-bad module contains
plugins that have quality or performance issues, or which
just aren't finished.

There are legal issues to consider for most "multimedia possibilities" -
especially ones that would require building gst-plugins-ugly. The
best approach to this goal probably requires working with lawyers to
make sure you are working within the limits of the laws in your
country.

Fluendo has some legally licensed plugins you can purchase to enable
non-free media on Solaris. They plan to have solutions available soon
for MPEG2, MPEG4 and DVD.
