You can already remove the background icons, in a couple of different  
ways (depending on exactly which, if any, desktop background  
functionality you want to retain).

Well, many or most of these are things you could get back just by  
replacing metacity with a different EWMH-compliant window manager[1],  
and I'd certainly like to see more alternatives in the package repos  
myself.  (I don't specifically know which one might provide the  
combination of features you'd like, though.)
