I did say "*if* you want to customize things with fonts.conf files."
I believe most users should use the GNOME Appearance Preferences instead,
though I'm not sure if Firefox recognizes those, being a non-GNOME
application.   I've added desktop-discuss to the cc list so the people
who work on Firefox can comment.   (This whole thread really belongs
there - sending every bug about every piece of software in the OS to
indiana-discuss does not scale.)
