The new GDM does not support gdmgreeter style themes. Note that the GNOME community is in the process of deprecating libgnomecanvas. The old gdmgreeter used libgnomecanvas to support its themes, and since the upstream GNOME community made it a requirement that usage of libgnomecanvas needed to be removed, it was necessary to drop support for the gdmgreeter and its themes. There is discussion in the upstream GDM community about how themes should be support moving forward. Should GDM be ported to use a more modern canvas such as libgoocanvas, or should it be rewritten to use something like OpenGL? Note that the new GDM does support some degree of theming, though it does not support the old gdmgreeter XML theme format. You can look at how Ubuntu has themed it to see an example of how the new GDM can be made to look exciting. The new GDM uses a standard .glade file for the login window, and it can be customized to change the appearance of the window. Also the background image and logo used in the new GDM can be specified.
