Public bug reported:

GDM has crashed on me twice using the same system. The first time, my sister
had changed the user while my screen had locked itself to utilize the guest
account due to her not knowing my password. It crashed once I logged out of
the guest account and I couldn't get startx to work at all upon reboot. The
entire system would only boot into a terminal after that. I could not fix the
system via recovery options either so no packages were damaged. And so, I
reinstalled Ubuntu completely.
The second time, I was simply using the lock screen to change users again.
Upon clicking the change user button on the screen lock window, the system
crashed entirely except for a small bar in the top-left corner. I could not
reach the terminal from here meaning the entire system had crashed.
