On my first try i tried to ctrl+alt+f1 but that didnt work-> system didnt respond to any key (not even after removing the modem; not even the power button) on my second try i tried to alt+tab (to the system monitor i had open, which showed no difference while connecting and while the mouse freezed), and then mouse worked normally again.
