This could be just a manifestation of bug #435719. Not sure though,
because the original report does not mention if /home is mounted on NFS.

Title:
OpenOffice.org writer can't open ODT files from sftp folders

Status in The OpenOffice.org Suite:
  Invalid
Status in “openoffice.org” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When accessing a folder over SFTP (or SSH, should be the same) using
nautilus, double click on an ODT file opens it in the archive manager.
The RMB menu for an ODT file on an SFTP folder only offers "archive
manager" or "archive mounter", while when opening the properties
dialog for such a file, in the "Open With" tab, OpenOffice.org Writer
is clearly listed and selected as the default option.

Even starting Writer directly from the menu and using the "Open file"
command to browse to the SFTP folder (which is listed as an active
mount point) doesn't work - after selecting the file and clicking
Open, nothing happens: Writer just sits there doing nothing.

the only workaround is to copy the file to a local folder, edit it,
save it and copy it back.
