I have since failed to re-create this issue. Three successive boots into live desktop, using the CD, have each got full device operation. Mouse and keyboard are recognized in X.
This bug should be deleted. I installed ubuntu onto the hard disk and booted EFI kernel, using rEFInd from Mac OSX. Had to boot 'nomodeset', otherwise got black vt screens.
