I see (and hear) similar symptoms as well on Kubuntu 12.10 + KDE 4.10.1,
but in contrast to what was reported in comment#2, I don't see
extraordinary levels in pavucontrol.

Audio recording did work well before KDE 4.10. PulseAudio version is
1:2.1-0ubuntu4.

Title:
No sound capturing possible - only noise - no hardware issue

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since my update to KDE 4.10.0 (Kubuntu 12.04 backports) sound
  recording is not possible anymore.

All I hear is hard noise, no matter what microphone I use (analog,
usb, …). I recorded my screen so you can see what's happening:

  http://youtu.be/4YM3oDcl7K4

I record sound using Audacity, so you can see the noise. Then I use
KMix and the Audiosettings software to change several configuration
  settings.

I booted Kubuntu 12.04.1 from CD-ROM (installation disk) to check if
it is a hardware issue, however recording works fine using the live
  system.

Please let me know if I can provide more helpful information.
