Same here. I did not see extraordinary volume levels in pavucontrol. I had to go back to Kubuntu 12.04 LTS and everything works perfectly again now.

All I hear is hard noise, no matter what microphone I use (analog, usb, …). I recorded my screen so you can see what's happening: http://youtu.be/4YM3oDcl7K4 I record sound using Audacity, so you can see the noise. Then I use KMix and the Audiosettings software to change several configuration settings. I booted Kubuntu 12.04.1 from CD-ROM (installation disk) to check if it is a hardware issue, however recording works fine using the live system. Please let me know if I can provide more helpful information. === Installed Pulse Audio packages === $ dpkg -l|grep ^ii|grep pulseaudio ii ffgtk-plugins-pulseaudio 0.8.5-0ubuntu1~precise ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio 0.10.31-1ubuntu1 ii pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-esound-compat 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-bluetooth 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-gconf 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-x11 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-zeroconf 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-utils 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 === Installed Phonon Packages === $ dpkg -l|grep ^ii|grep phonon ii libphonon4 4:4.7.0really4.6.0-0ubuntu1 ii phonon 4:4.7.0really4.6.0-0ubuntu1 ii phonon-backend-gstreamer 4:4.7.0really4.6.2-0ubuntu1~precise1~ppa1 ii phonon-backend-vlc 0.6.0-0ubuntu1~ppa1~precise1 === Installed ALSA packages === $ dpkg -l|grep ^ii|grep alsa ii alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu1 ii alsa-utils 1.0.25-1ubuntu5 ii bluez-alsa 4.98-2ubuntu7 ii bluez-alsa:i386 4.98-2ubuntu7 ii gstreamer0.10-alsa 0.10.36-1ubuntu0.1 ii libsox-fmt-alsa 14.3.2-3 === Anything sound related === $ dpkg -l|grep ^ii|grep sound ii asoundconf-gtk 1.6-0ubuntu1 ii esound-common 0.2.41-10build3 ii lib32asound2 1.0.25-1ubuntu10.1 ii libadplug-2.2.1-0 2.2.1+dfsg1-1build1 ii libasound2 1.0.25-1ubuntu10.1 ii libasound2:i386 1.0.25-1ubuntu10.1 ii libasound2-plugins 1.0.25-1ubuntu1 ii libasound2-plugins:i386 1.0.25-1ubuntu1 ii libcanberra-gtk-module:i386 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libcanberra-gtk0:i386 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libcanberra-gtk3-0 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libcanberra-gtk3-module 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libcanberra0 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libcanberra0:i386 0.28-3ubuntu3 ii libmikmod2:i386 3.1.12-2 ii libsoundtouch0 1.6.0-2build1 ii linux-sound-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu1 ii pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-esound-compat 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-bluetooth 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-gconf 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-x11 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-module-zeroconf 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii pulseaudio-utils 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ii sndfile-tools 1.03-2build2 ii sound-theme-freedesktop 0.7.pristine-2 ii sox 14.3.2-3 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-37.58-generic 3.2.35 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-37-generic x86_64 AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
