Xorg crash on laptop after disconnecting external monitor

Bug description:
When disconnecting the external monitor from my thinkpad with ubuntu
12.04 X crashes and I get a new login screen presented on the laptop
display - loosing all non saved data...
Prior to 12.04 (I am not sure about 11.10 cause I skipped it) X simply
switched to laptop display only (even if it was not used before
disconnecting the external monitor).
Current state makes docking station usage a data risk!
