I have the same issue using Nvidia (proprietary, tested) driver 331.38 on my HP Envy using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, kernel 3.13.0-32-generic x86_64. I also switch to a console using ctrl+alt+f[1-6] and then back to ctrl-alt+f7 and all works for a short time then it happens again.

It seems to stay that way until I switch to tty6 with ctrl+alt+f6 and then back to tty7 which has the display, this causes it to un-hang. This then happens back and forth. I am not sure but it might be triggered by clicking things, opening windows and such. The problem disappears when switching back to the open source driver. Should I try an even newer driver from nvidia, or is there any more information you need for troubleshooting?
