I *think* that gnome-shell-extension-appindicator is meant to be activated by default in 17.10. It just looks disabled due to bug 1718850 and bug 1236749. However, activating topicons plus does. I know I'm running little apps/indicators, because they show whenever i activate topicons. Whenever I activate ubuntu appindicators, nothing happens, can't access the apps in any way.
