Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with hplip.  You made 
this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and hplip have been updated since 
then. 

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the 
ticket? 
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to 
this bug? 
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run 
the following (only once):
apport-collect 503471
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this 
particular issue.

  pdf printing on karmic fails: Backend "hp" returned status 1 (failed)

  Binary package hint: cups

  Using cups CUPS Version 1.4.1 from Karmic Koala, I have problems
  printing PDF Files.

  The message in the Webinterface is: abgebrochen
  "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"

  On another note, using the post from the following bugreport fixes the
  issue:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/407344/

  Nevertheless, Downgrading to cups 1.3.9–1 seems not the optimal choice and 
the bug should be fixed in future releases of Cups. Spent the whole day 
troubleshooting the printer setup in a network installation, finding out at the 
end that cups is instable.
