Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 17.10 (artful) reached end-of-life on July 19, 2018.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling us which new version it is in and change the bug status to Confirmed. ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => xorg-server (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1749595 Title: No window, wrong size Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Since Ubuntu 17, I have had the following bug, I assumed it would be fixed without my input but has not. When opening some package, sometimes the icon appears on the left, but no window will appear. This occurs most often with any pdf software, but also Libre, but also shot-well, cheese or mainly graphics programs. The problem goes away if the software is closed and restarted, but sometimes this requires several attempts. This also occurs sometimes (the most annoying) if the software is iconized and then re-enlarged. Also, the default window size, only for graphics software and pdf, opens windows that occupy 2 or three work spaces. If the internal defaults are corrected, the same window size opens regardless. This makes it difficult to size a window every time it is opened. As this occurs across several programs, I do not know how to collect the proper bug information.
