Title:
  Boot hangs on passphrase prompt for encrypted root file system with
  NVidia proprietary driver

Status in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  During installation of Ubuntu 17.10.1, I checked the box for installing
proprietary drivers,
  but on the initial (successful) boot after installation it came up running
the Nouveau driver,
  and then I was prompted to select the proprietary drivers I wanted: NVidia &
AMD64 Microcode.
  I selected both.

  Rebooting to the default Ubuntu grub entry fails at the passphrase prompt for
the root file system.
  There is a graphic prompt for the passphrase, but there appears to be no
response to key strokes.
  But passphrase actually appears in clear text on virtual terminal 7 when
switched to.
  Unsuspecting users may enter their passphrase and walk away with their
computer on (e.g. to get help) and anyone else with physical access potentially
could discover their passphrase in the meantime.

  This happened with the initial nvidia driver: nvidia-384:amd64
384.111-0ubuntu0.17.10.1
  But continues to happen after upgrading to: nvidia-390:amd64 390.12-0ubuntu1
  Likewise it occurs with both kernels 4.13.0-21 & 4.13.0-31

  The following work around the bug:
  1. Boot in recovery mode. Then select "Resume normal boot" twice.
     (Alternatively, open recovery shell and exit it to resume booting.)
  2. But I preferred to modify /etc/default/grub as follows:
  Replacing:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
  with
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
  and adding:
    GRUB_TERMINAL=console
    GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
