@Sebastien: Your new push fixed the issue. After the new snap was installed, I started Thunderbird and it immediately imported the original profile and started to download the emails from all IMAP accounts. The locally cached mail folders didn't get copied.
So far things seem to be working but I didn't have time yet for closer test beyond deleting a few emails.
