i believe apache has or is going to be using the shared-mime-info spec as 
well.

and yes, there is a spec for the mimeinfo stuff. it's on fd.o, and the desktops 
are using it.

and yes, this issue has nothing to do really with mime info and therefore 
isn't helped by that.
