This doesn't answer your question but the origin of the names are that
'crespo' and 'herring' refer to different things. 'crespo' is the device
name and 'herring' is the board name. See:

The 'soju' refers to a particular software configuration. So there is
the 'soju' configuration running on the 'crespo' device that uses the
'herring' board. Why some projects use board name and some device name,
I don't know.
