Hi,
Awesome! Good article ;)
Some stuff that should be added:
- an explanation of the power saving options
- uploads should start automatically (depending on the settings) and if
there are more than 50 reports ready for uploading
- it's possible to save mobile traffic/bandwidth by adjusting the upload
and the map resolution settings
- you can save power by deactivating wifi but checking the checkbox next
to "Always allow scanning" in the advanced wifi settings dialogue (it's
available on Android 4.3+ and might be called slightly different on
samsung devices) -> MozStumbler will then scan for wifi aps that are
around, but the device stops searching for known Access points that it
can connect to (what you need to know though is, that after enabling it,
MozStumbler maybe needs to be restarted, if it is already scanning ->
check the checkbox before you start scanning)
and it might be useful for some of the stumblers to know that the
minimum distance before MozStumbler records a new record is either 1
second or 30m -> just so that nobody is wondering why it doesn't record
that many points while walking
side note:
I still would like to see this changed back to 10 meters btw.
because it was like that before the play store release and worked fine
hanno said afterwards that the impact on the server wasn't as hard as
thought, which makes sense because most stumblers are using cars which
are driving faster than 10m or 30m per second anyways so that the one
second interval grips,
but for walking people it would be nice to get more accurate data,
because it is possible
for cars it wouldn't be possible of course, but for pedestrians it is
BTT:
@prathamesh
But I also think you missed the point here, this thread in general was
rather about FxStumbler than about MozStumbler ^^
FxStumbler is an app for Firefox OS that has similar functionality to
MozStumbler (but is also a bit restricted by the OS in comparison)
If someone wants to contact clochix:
just open an issue on his github repo ;)

Hello Michael !
I am Prathamesh from Mozilla India community. Thank you for posting this
message on the dev-geolocation list.
I am happy to inform you that Mozilla India community has formed a
Geolocation Task Force which aims on evangelizing Mozilla Stumbler
application and thus promoting Mozilla Location Service. Our team has come
up with various geolocation stumbling events and also, we have documented
some steps which could be used to teach the newbies as how to use the
MozStumbler application.

The enthusiasm is appreciated, but we aren't recommending FxStumbler; it
isn't actively maintained (no fault of Clochix I should mention, FxOS
hasn't changed to meet the needs of the app), and is not installable by
average users (requires internal-level permissions) which vastly limits the
number of installs. There is an additional problem that there is no web api
to get accurate info about the GPS state (GPS fix state is nonexistent as a
web api).
However, we are working on landing stumbling in FxOS in the Gecko/Gonk
layer:

My hope is that we can push this to Flame users and Foxfooders first.
