I was going to recommend CCVS, but I'm a bit concerned that you feel
you'd need a loan to cover $700. IIRC, CCVS is about $1000, but it's
a nice small program that has worked flawlessly for us for almost a
year now.
CCVS acts like a terminal, and makes the call out over a modem to the
credit card processor. I feel more comfortable with this approach
than with some of the over-the-Internet systems out there, although
things have certainly changed since we decided to go with CCVS. It's
not free software, but having looked at developing free software to do
the same thing, I can understand why - certification is a very
difficult and expensive process, and may even disallow distribution of
source code.
One caveat, and it might be a big one. CCVS is essentially just an
API - you're expected to develop your own application around it. It
comes with C, Perl, and TCL interfaces, and a very simple command-line
application mainly included for a code example. That's it. There's
not even any support for networking built in - they want you to take
the responsibility of opening up any security holes.
Overall, I have found CCVS to be a great solution if you have the
resources to develop or have developed some glue code. Much like
OpenSRS, actually - although the "sample code" provided is essentially
complete enough to be used as-is. You really should have some
in-house software development talent if you want to do this stuff.
