I don't know if it's any use to you guys, I guess you all use Perl, but I
have been developing a Wordnet extension for PHP, specifically for this
purpose. Maybe there's something similar for Perl.

Once you get past the technical jargon, WordNet is actually a very useful
database. It has synonyms and a bunch of other relationships between
words.
