More specifically, it has to do with how the key is "cooked" before use. This primarily affects DES, because it's unable to use a long key like Blowfish can use, so (IIRC) there's a process to fold the key on itself somehow or another to come up with a usable key.

Spend some time wandering through the list archives and you'll find a bunch of nuggets like this (or at least discussions about them...typically somebody who's been around for a while will have copies of referenced documents). Lots of folks early on spent time collaborating to build documents to help other people get OpenSRS running on [your platform here].
