I am running Simply Mepis on three different boxes, one laptop, here and Pro Mepis beta as well on this box. All formatted hard drive partitions come up for the user's mouse click in the KDE GUI mode.

That is fine if you don't have any data on those partitions!

I really do not completely understand the above question or complaint??

If you are a new user, and are used to using Windows, bearing in mind that these are the people simplyMEPIS is supposed to be targeting, you are expecting to be able to access your data from applications.

If for example, you have music on your Windows drive, you go into XMMS in Linux and try to play a song.

Click the button to add your music directory, find the directory, add it - NOTHING HAPPENS!

You want to look up some images you have scanned into Windows. Open your image program, navigate to the right drive and try to open the directory where your images live - NOTHING HAPPENS!

It does not make sense to auto mount all partitions if they are available for the user when needed, then who cares?

It does if you want to access the data on them. See above.

There are many distros that will not give the user this privilege without special root intervention.

Yep, and there are many distros out there that are not designed for beginners.

SimplyMEPIS is supposed to be "SIMPLE" point and click Linux.
Not automounting partitions for beginners once the distro is installed to hard drive is NOT user friendly for beginners!

Mepis wins hands down for a reliable GUI click and drop kind of operation.

Not yet it doesn;t. We have done a lot of testing. Xandros wins hands down with new users. At the moment, we introduce new users by installing Xandros and Windows dual boot, then once they are comfortable with the transition, we get them to try Mepis.

When we installed Mepis first as a dual boot with Windows, we had problems because the partitions don;t automount. We still have users that just prefer to go back to Xandros because of this problem.

Bear in mind that I don;t simply test the distros on my computers. I test them by installing them on beginners' computers, and then attending to the problems as they arise.

My problem is I like them all...

Yep, so do I, but except for the automount thing, and a few other glitches, like hardware that doesn;t always work (Sound is not working in test 3 that was working on 2004.06) Mepis is pretty good.

I claim that Mepis is more than suitable for beginners, they really do not deserve it. Especially those who
like their operating system's hoods being welded shut running Windoze.

I claim that it is not ready for beginners until a couple of things have been fixed - and the automount thing is one of the main ones.

I don;t care what Pro MEPIS does. It can use a tree stump to mount for all I care, but simplyMEPIs should be - well - SIMPLE!
