One more argument in favor:

As Thunderbird is based on Firefox ESR, we, Firefox release managers,
are also
managing uplift requests to improve Thunderbird (especially during the
two first
ESR releases as we take stability patches).
Sometimes, we see important requests coming for Thunderbird which could
affect badly Firefox.
In these case, we rejects the uplift. Thunderbird developers have to
take them into a relbranch of Firefox ESR
(which are btw also a source of confusion for Fx RM).
While we would still have to do a relbranch for tb specific changes in
gecko, having a single repo would simplify
the situation.
