I believe you meant Thunderbird.

The secure connection settings are for SSL/TLS. Secure authentication
means login and password protection done with different technology.

I do think these are confusing. It is be possible to autodetect the most
secure settings in most cases. Often only email address would be needed
for accurate autodetection. There are some pathological cases where
autodetection will give wrong results.
