That's what I meant by "what type does your OS map .mp3 to?".

More questions:

   Does it work if the two files are in the same directory?

   Does it work if you set type="audio/x-mpeg" on the <object>?

   What "mpeg"-relate MIME types are listed in about:plugins?

Honestly, it could be some sort of weird timing issue with our 
interaction with quicktime....  That's my best guess so far.
