Well, as a matter of fact, Jabber/XMPP inclusion into Thunderbird has
been a widely requested feature (see

broader road map of Mozilla Messaging. Unfortunately it will not make it
into TB 3, but it might be in successive releases. I'm just afraid that
not much work has been done yet however...
