Well, that RFC is a useful basis.

It depends on what do you want to do with DNs ?

With the LDAP parts of the Address Books in SeaMonkey and Thunderbird I have been looking at the various decisions that need to be made to get writing to ldap servers working. As part of this, for new cards, we need to be able to set up the DN with something reasonable. We can use the baseDN to form the basis of the DN, but we'd need something for the rest of it. So as you suggest, maybe the best solution is to make it configurable behind the scenes (or advanced) and allow the user to select a subset of fields, e.g. cn and email or location.
