Hey everyone,

TL;DR; I would like to ask for a lazy consensus of adding a footer to
our users@ list explaining how to unsubscribe.

There were quite a few users that got confused about unsubscribing
from users@ list. I think there are quite a few reasons why we should
inform the users how they could unsubscribe, because many of them do
not even remember how they subscribed.

I opened https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-24249 and during
the discussion it turned out that "standard" "list-unsubscribe" header
is not effective in many cases (for example gmail users do not see an
easy unsubscribe option because apache.org mailing lists apparently do
not have proven history of unsubscribing) and seems the best way to
deal with it is to add explicit information in the footer.

We can simply add this standard footer to our list posts:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
To unsubscribe, e-mail: <#l#>-unsubscribe@<#h#>
For additional commands, e-mail: <#l#>-help@<#h#>

I am not a big fan of email footers but I think it would be nice if we
add it for users@ list at least. The dev@ subscribers are much more
"aware" and will likely find a way.

No need to respond to it unless you would like to argue against it. I
will let the consensus question run for 72 hours + 1 day for the
weekend (tilI Tuesday 7th of March 8 am CET).

J.

Additional info: some extra information that came out during the
discussion: There are some regulations and expectations for the
unsubscribe button:

https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business

"Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you.
Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how
the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future.
Craft the notice in a way that’s easy for an ordinary person to
recognize, read, and understand."

J,
