As long as there's an apr_time_now_in_microseconds() and I'm allowed to
determine intervals somehow (which I'm now doing by subtracting two time
values), I could care less what else happens.

apr_time_now() should continue to return an apr_time_t value.
If you want seconds, call time() [posix, quite portable].
