I just ran it again (on OS X 10.4) and sure enough I saw this as
well.
It looks like its testmd4. If its run with no args it 'digests
standard input'.
Yep, this is the problem. I used
echo blah | make check
Then things run smoothly, but this should be fixed.
I had thought this was documented someplace...
