Here's the XML file for the ArgoEclipse update site that went online August 2006:
http://argoeclipse.tigris.org/update_site/site.xml so you can see how the Eclipse team designed their XML file for the same service. Plugins are grouped into features with each feature having one or more plugins. Features are what users select to install. Features are grouped into categories on the update site. Categories are just a user convenience feature. Plugins may be in multiple features (e.g. the Java RE plugin could be in both the "Java Language Support" feature and the "All Reverse Engineering plugins" feature. Features may be in multiple categories. The update service knows where each plugin came from and can go back there to check for updates. You can have as many update sites as you want and plugins and/or users can add to the list of sites.
