Sorry about that. A slip of the keyboard let that message escape before it
was done. Ignore the second half. Here's what it was meant to say:
If you're wondering about the timeframe for dropping support of JDK 1.4, as
I was, here's what my research discovered:
- In summary, it will be as soon as Java 6 ("Mustang") is released or
"soon."
- It will almost certainly occur before our next release (which is not yet
planned), so we can probably start acting on it now.
- Sun supports current version plus two past versions (Java 1.5, 1.4, 1.3)
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/eol.policy.html
- BUT Sun *starts* the end-of-life (EOL) process for version N-2 as soon as
version N is announced, so Java 1.3 has begun the EOL process and will stop
being supported
- ArgoUML, on the other hand, works off the announcements and only supports
versions for which EOL has not yet begun (effectively the same thing as
saying we support the current version plus one past version (Java 6, Java 5)

tml
- Java 6 is scheduled for "Fall 2006" - probably late Fall at this point :-)
A release candidate was made available 21 Nov 2006.

- Java major releases are currently 7-8 quarters apart, so it'll be at least
2 years before we need to worry about this again.
