Thanks Jeff for the interest in this. I think most of the existing GCP IO connectors use Google API client libraries [1] due to historical reasons (these were the libraries that were available when these connectors were originally built). We should upgrade to latest Google Cloud client libraries [2] at some point but I don't have an exact ETA for this.
