@geomacy I think we want `catalogItemId` explicit as the catalog item ID of
the item, in addition to the "hierarchy" (which is maybe better called
`catalogItemsSearchPath` ?). It is a separate concept, and feels messy
assuming the first in the hierarchy is the ID of the item (would be cleaner IMO
to always put the ID of the item at the top of the hierarchy and drop the
hierarchy if superfluous). We also need to be able to tell if an item does not
have a catalog item ID (but possibly things in a search path from its creation
context) eg it was created straight from a java class.
