Just an FYI:
I've asked Olivier Lamy to look into getting maven to fail the build if the tag exists. (It's good to be the boss.... ;-) It's now logged as: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRELEASE-722 so some future version of the release plugin won't let this happen. I've seen this happen way too many times now. Needs to get fixed.
