Hello, Projects can be selected from student proposals as well which start on 20th march '17 there are a couple of JIRA tickets tagged as gsoc2017 and gsoc2016 which can be taken up by students. You can have a look at this <https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/5416945173135360/>.
