About possible uses, being able to access backend logic easily over SOAP can be a major selling point when people are afraid of being dependent on Cocoon (IMHO), so this is certainly a Good Thing.

You should be able to find good example services at http://xmethods.org/. Maybe not "Send unlimited free SMS to India" which is on top of the list today, but there are many others...
