It is not theoretical. Binary files, as well as UTF-8 encoded files, are corrupted by filtering=on. If you pull history of the build.xml file, I'm certain you will find relevant commits (you'd have to dig into C2.0 history though).


Does Cocoon need the filtering?

Yes, C2.1 needs filtering.
