What about using the scheme I suggested for commons-math recently? We can release commons-imaging 1.0-beta1 with a dedicated GAV and package name (for example org.apache.commons:commons-imaging-beta1 and org.apache.commons.imaging.beta1.*). If there is a consensus on this I can volunteer to manage the release.
