For mail merge, I suggest your ask in the Writer and user's list. The mail merge feature is a feature of Writer (which was also designed and implemented there), and though I've seen and rudimentary used it, I don't know all its details by far. In particular, a question like "isn t it possible to select a printer anymore?" just makes me think "Huh?" :) The only pointer I could give you is http://specs.openoffice.org/writer/mail_merge/mailmerge_specification.sxw.
