A quick follow up on this.
I received this message from the user:
"Well, I did have the system crash several times while I was
experimenting with stuff. The weirdest problem I had was yesterday
after I deleted some of the test data from the CheckOut table, and tried
to e-mail the database to you. I got a message from Windows Mail that
it couldn't send the attachement. I figured I must have left the file
open, but it was closed. I tried saving the database file with a
different name, and I couldn't send that either. Then, I went into
Window Explorer, and it said the file was in use by another program,
even after I had rebooted, and knew that nothing extra was running.....
I did have a couple of crashed files that the OO Base system was unable
to restore, and after I deleted those, things seemed to work."
The interesting part to me there,
