More info : I have just tested with OOo 3.3rc7, same connector, same mysql server, and CAST still functions correctly for me. So my guess is that if there is a problem, it is related to latest version of mysql server, which is 5.1.53, so the won't fix is understandable because apparently it is not OOo's bug.
