AFAIK, the core hasn't be changed and using ApacheDS-RC2 is the

I've had a number of problems this morning, with various
applications exhibiting a variety of (sometimes very severe)
problems.....
Well, I'm not seeing that here. I'm running 10.4.6 (Darwin xx.xx.xx

The /etc/init.d stuff was present in RC1 as well...
