Hi Jean and Anderw!
Jean: I would be honored if you want to include parts (or all) of the tutorial
in the guide. Please feel free to consider this a fact. Just let me finish the
polish and some content that needs to be added or deleted. If you want, you can
help with editing too. Kate and Mickey are invited to help with the editing if
they are still interested. If they are, I will rush to post the current version
in OOo Authors. I am sorry I have not done this yet but I have been very
focused on research and writing.
The first part of the tutorial, which -you are right- seems rather theoretical
and generic, is necessary to really harness the power of database application
development and give regular people the chance to make a useful use of Base. It
is not only part of the guide outline but also part of the tutorial outline I
proposed when this project started and I think it is very useful.
For what we are discussing with Drew, it seems that the remainder of the
tutorial will be very Base-specific; but also very much of the middle level we
had intended. You can give it a read when I have a decent draft, which will be
soon. It seems that the tutorial will include developing functionalities by
including Macros. This area is new to me but seems very, very interesting.
Drew: It seems that several different projects are converging right now on the
needs of the Base guide. I think that the library of functions that you
described to me is more important than ever, and complements very well the
tutorial. These two things, together, can be very useful for the Base guide.
I went to read some of the links you left for me, specifically the Basic
language guide. It seemed quite straightforward So I agree with you, we can
make a section on Basic scripts and how to use them in Base forms. I did became
aware of little problems like the fact that Basic date variables don't match
Base date types. Anyway, I hope that you can point out the difficulties before
I break my head trying to understand why things are not working when they
should. Furthermore, you are going to have to show me step by step, so that I
can replicate and translate it to educational form, how you connect the fields
to the scripts to achieve the desired functionality. I propose that we work
with the example in the tutorial once we agree to lock the design.
In order to decide on how much scripting or regular Base GUI functionality we
will use (and find the right balance as you said0, let me send you -in addition
to the forms- a sample of the reports this tutorial will need. Then you tell me
how much pain and tears they will create and we decided after that.
By the way, given that we tend to talk in terms of "days" to coordinate, what
time zone are you located in? I live in NY.
Cheers,
M.
Alright I'll be looking for the report specs. I will also get the update
to the UML model back to you tonight with the Patient Account class added.
I'll just update the Draw file you sent earlier. Regarding updated
files, I need to expand on some of my comments on the first screen
design document also don't I. That I am afraid will have to wait till
the morrow.
My timezone is the same as yours, as long as the NY you refer to is also
the home of the Yankees...Ah - Baseball season is over ;-(
Now as for coordinating - two thoughts.
One - a sprint, simply put if we have a day that we can both ( or all )
agree on and a block of time we could try to work together. Not quite a
shared white board, but we could fashion something very similar with
Skype or something similar.
Two - I have begun using Chandler, a new collaborative PIM for small
teams, for tracking items on multiple projects. ( as I am notoriously
late on everything, can yet more technology save me? ) A very
collaborative oriented tool..Later tonight I'll be setting up a 'mid
level tutorial' collection in the package ( some items are then shared
with the "base util-library project" ), for myself, and will publish
this to the Chandler hub. I'll go ahead and send you a read/write access
ticket ( trust me it will make sense when you get it ), if you have an
email account with imap access ( gmail is such a service...finally) it
may prove to be the best way to get information back and forth in a
timely fashion. ( and keep me focused on a timeline hopefully...)
Anyway - take care for now and talk to you soon then
Drew
