The list styles I created were just the basic not-fully fleshed-out
list and paragraph styles. The thought process and conceptual parts
are still missing. I knew the how and why of them (plus, only a very
few were doing much writing/editing to use them until recently) and
simply used those styles out of habit by duplicating in OOo what
FrameMaker did a bit easier (by combining the paragraph and list
styles) with their list tags.
So, some exposition is in order in the guide part for the lists
(possibly, nested only two-deep--both bulleted or numbered or a
combination of them). I also had a special variant of the OOoText body
list style for introducing the lists that had less vertical spacing
after it, as I thought our former lists had over-abundant white space.
However, by using zero vertical space coming into the first list item
(and keeping the post spacing down in our OOoText body paragraph
style), we could eliminate that introductory OOoText body paragraph
style altogether.

Also, using negative vertical spacing would be another option for the
first list item, although I haven't yet tried that. But, it should work
just fine, regardless of the post OOoText body vertical spacing if
negative or zero vertical spacing is used for list entry.
