I'm not super familiar with the way mailing list communities work either. There are a lot of open source projects that use a public Slack for building their communities. I think that would prove to be beneficial.
The only downside is that it's not as easily searchable in terms of previous conversation topics. So perhaps big conversation topics should still be in the mailing list or some kind of special labeled GitHub issue.
