just checked a CentOS 7.2 box, mvn 3.0.5. RHEL does provide a software collections repo and that's been bumped to 3.5.0 https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_software_collections/3/html/3.0_release_notes/chap-rhscl#sect-RHSCL-Changes-maven
